In the first few days of training camp, New York Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold was one of the few first-round picks that had yet to ink his first NFL contract.

There was much attention toward the fact that Darnold had yet to ink his contract with the Jets that had made him one of the final two first-round selections from this year's draft being unsigned as Chicago Bears linebacker Roquan Smith is the only other to not have a deal in place. With the contract in place, this removes any potential distraction from the situation as the former USC standout can focus on getting back on the field and taking part in training camp ahead of the start of the preseason

Darnold is expected to have a shot at earning the starting job prior to the 2018 campaign as he's in direct competition with Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater for that spot. The coaching staff has continued to pour praise toward the 21-year-old while voicing that he will have every opportunity to compete to be the starter out of the gate to his NFL career. New York is hopeful that he can be the long-term answer under center that the franchise has lacked for quite some time that could lead them to a huge amount of success.

These next few weeks in training camp and the preseason while showcasing where Darnold is at in his development at this point in time prior to his rookie season. There is no rush to get him on the field, but the organization has a great sense of optimism about what may lie ahead of their rookie quarterback.
