There is a renewed sense of optimism around the New York Jets with the presence of rookie quarterback Sam Darnold as possibly the long-term fixture under center for the franchise.
However, the team has hit a minor bump in the road as Darnold has yet to agree to his rookie deal. Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network is reporting that has pushed him to not attend the training camp portion for rookies.
As #Jets rookies are set to report today, first-round QB Sam Darnold is not among them, source said. His contract isn’t done yet, so he’s staying away. Important context: Vets don’t report yet and practice isn’t until Friday. It doesn’t feel like anyone involved is sweating it.

There isn't any significant level of concern with the situation as there is still plenty of time for the two sides to work out a deal. Fellow rookie running back Saquon Barkley didn't agree to a new deal until a few days ago.
Article Continues BelowThis is something that may just be a matter of time before it all gets worked out so that Darnold can get into minicamp so that he can begin to make a strong case for the starting job this upcoming season.
The Jets are expected to give him every opportunity to compete for that starting job alongside Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater. Darnold has already impressed the coaching staff and his teammates from what he has shown so far in the team offseason workouts.
Training camp will be a chance for him to show what he brings to the table and how he fares against NFL level competition on the practice field while demonstrating how much of the playbook he has picked up at this point in time.
New York should be expected to ramp up their efforts to get the rookie deal worked out to get Darnold as much practice time prior to the start of the preseason in the next couple of weeks. Unless this situation drags on, this won't cause any strong level of concern from the organization.
