Jets and QB Sam Darnold expected to reach agreement today he is expected at their building today, per source.
Darnold will sign a four-year, $30.25 million deal, including $20 million guaranteed.
Darnold, who was the No. 3 overall pick by the Jets in the 2018 NFL Draft, sat out the start of training camp with his contract still unsigned. There have been some reports about what the real cause for the delay in his deal has been.
One report is that the Jets want to void Darnold’s entire guarantee, which is expected to be around $30 million, if he is fined for his conduct on or off-field at any point during the life of the contract.
Article Continues BelowAnother claims that the Jets want to remove the offset language from the deal, which would allow Darnold to double dip if he for some reason gets cut by New York during his four-year contract.
But it appears as if whatever the disagreements the two sides had, they are in the process of being straightened out.
That should be a good sign for both Darnold and the Jets. While the No. 3 overall pick is expected to win the starting quarterback job this season, his absence in training camp opened the door for Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCown to overtake him.
When Darnold signs his deal, Bears first-round linebacker Roquan Smith will be the lone remaining rookie who still hasn’t signed.
