New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles still hasn’t made an official announcement about the team’s starting quarterback. That’s despite the Teddy Bridgewater trade clearing the way for rookie Sam Darnold to get the job and several reports over the past few weeks basically assuming that will be the case.

If (or when) Darnold does get that starting job, he claims to have the comfort level needed to step up to the task.

“If I am going to be the starter Week 1, I feel really comfortable,” Darnold said per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. “I feel really comfortable with the offense. I feel really comfortable with the guys inside this locker room. I’m just really excited for whatever opportunity comes my way. But if not, I’m going to be the best backup I can be.”

Darnold certainly showed a lot of competency for a rookie during his three preseason outings. While he wasn’t spectacular, he proved that he’s already capable of taking control of this team, which is all the Jets really needed to see from him.

It didn't really make much sense for Darnold to sit out the start of the season if he could show he was ready to play right away, and he was able to do just that.

Barring some completely unforeseen scenario, Bowles will likely name Darnold as his starter in the next few days. The already high expectations will only get higher from there, but Darnold appears confident in his ability to meet them when he does get that chance.
