New York Jets running back Trenton Cannon is entering his second year with the team, but as Connor Hughes of The Athletic points out, he has a hard road to make the team.

According to Hughes the biggest reason the Jets drafted Cannon was that coach Brant Boyer saw a lot of Tarik Cohen in him.

Cannon is a decent kick returner but had too many muffs last year, and if he wants to make the team this year he is going to have to try and find a way to get the job back.

Cannon is quick. He has decent hands. But while he brings something to the table as a kick returner, the Jets seem to have given up on him in the punt return game. He muffed his fair share of balls during training camp last summer and in the preseason. While that happened under Bowles, Gase clearly took notes. Cannon didn’t regularly field punts during OTAs and minicamp — an ominous sign for someone drafted to star in the return game. On offense, Cannon is fifth string, working behind Le’Veon Bell, Ty Montgomery, Eli McGuire and De’Angelo Henderson Sr. Note: Bilal Powell hasn’t practiced yet since the Jets signed him. Once he returns, that will likely push Cannon to seventh.

Le'Veon Bell and Ty Montgomery are locks to make the roster and the team gave Bilal Powell a $90,000 signing bonus, so it's hard to see them cutting him.

Elijah McGuire also seems like a pretty safe bet to make the roster so unless Cannon can beat out him or there is an injury, chances are Cannon won't be on the Jets active roster week one.
