The New York Jets were considered one of the top contenders to trade for Khalil Mack from the Oakland Raiders. However, they were unable to get their man, who was eventually traded to the Chicago Bears.
According to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.tv, the Jets made what they thought to be a “competitive” offer for Mack. Although, their offer did not include two first-round picks like what the Raiders were reportedly looking for — and what the Bears eventually gave up.
Vacchiano notes that the Jets initially called the Raiders to talk about a possible Mack trade more than a week ago, but the Raiders weren’t quite ready to make a deal at that time. The Raiders were apparently still convinced Mack would return and play out the season on his nearly $14 million deal.
Article Continues BelowA couple of days before pulling the trigger on the Bears deal, the Raiders were still unwilling to part with their star unless “someone really gets their attention with a crazy offer.” But after Aaron Donald signed his massive deal, the Raiders were much more amenable to talk about a deal, and Chicago also came forward with that “crazy offer” they were looking for.
With Mack now off the table, Vacchiano notes that the Broncos’ Shane Ray and the Jaguars’ Dante Fowler could be trade options for the Jets after both had their fifth-year options declined. Obviously, neither is anywhere near the caliber of Mack, but with the Jets still desperate for pass rush help, either one would still represent a substantial upgrade.
