The Washington Redskins continue to explore the market for left tackle Trent Williams this offseason. Among the notable teams that have emerged as potential suitors are the New York Jets.
Washington remains optimistic that a deal will get done for Williams in the near future. According to Connor Hughes of The Athletic, New York has not made very much headway:
League source confirms, that things are “trending in the right direction” regarding a Trent Williams trade.
However it doesn’t appear that’s with the Jets. Source said they’re “not the frontrunner” at this point, although they’ve made a call.
The Jets' interest in Williams is certainly understandable. After all, they have made efforts to shore up the protection for quarterback Sam Darnold in recent years and bringing in a player of his caliber would provide a major boost to this offensive line. Unfortunately, it seems they may have to find a way to sweeten the pot.
Reports indicate that Washington was seeking a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft in exchange for Williams. New York currently owns the No. 48 pick on Day 2, however, it appears to be too valuable of a commodity for them to part ways with.
If the Jets do not attempt to pick up negotiations again before the draft, they will have to settle for the number of free agency signings they made.
Although Williams would easily become the most talented member of their offensive line, the onus will fall on George Fant, Connor McGovern, and Greg Van Roten to provide some quality depth.
