Last season, with newly signed C.J. Mosley missing the majority of the year due to injury, Burgess got a chance to start for the Jets. The former undrafted linebacker out of Louisville would start in 10 games for New York in 2019.
Altogether, in his 10 starts, Burgess supplied the Jets with 80 tackles, five pass breakups, a forced fumble, an interception, and half a sack. Despite his contributions a season ago, New York feels comfortable letting him go just weeks before the upcoming season begins.
Article Continues BelowDue to concerns of COVID-19, Mosley opted out of the 2020 season with the Jets. As a result, New York is left with veteran Avery Williamson and second-year linebacker, Blake Cashman as their starting inside linebackers.
Besides Williamson and Cashman, the Jets re-signed Neville Hewitt and brought in Patrick Onwuasor this offseason. Therefore, Burgess appeared to be the odd-man-out as he was suddenly buried on the depth chart.
Given his performance from last season, Burgess likely won't spend too much time in free agency. Especially with teams scouring the market for players that are being released in the coming days.
With training camps coming to a close soon, teams are shaking up their rosters to appease the NFL's roster guidelines. Even though he was a useful player for the Jets in 2019, Burgess will be continuing his career elsewhere.
