University of Mississippi wide receiver A.J. Brown is drawing a lot of interest from NFL teams with the draft looming next month, but whether or not he will be a first-round pick is up for debate.
Brown himself, however, believes that he is definitely worthy of a first-round selection in spite of his rather pedestrian numbers at the Scouting Combine:
“My opinion? The 40-yard dashes and all that stuff, they don’t tell you if you’re a good football player,” A.J. Brown said, according to Nick Suss of The Mississippi Clarion Ledger. “I had to do it, so I’m glad to get it over with. But I wasn’t big on that. That wasn’t my main focus. You’ve got to run routes to get open. That’s what I’m working on.”
The 21-year-old posted a 40-yard dash time of 4.49 seconds last month and registered a cone drill time of 6.89 seconds at his Pro Day. But his production on the field speaks for itself, as Brown is coming off of a terrific junior campaign in which he hauled in 85 receptions for 1,320 yards and six touchdowns.
Brown feels that is more than enough to get him picked on day one:
“If we’re being honest, I feel like I should be picked first,” A.J. Brown said. “But I can’t control none of that. I just control what I can control. I know I put everything out there. Of course I feel like I’m a No. 1 receiver.”
The Starkville, Ms. native also had a spectacular season during his sophomore year, catching 75 passes for 1,252 yards and 11 scores.
