Washington Redskins running back Adrian Peterson thinks that Emmitt Smith's all-time rushing record is in within reach for him. Peterson currently has 12,372 career rushing yards, which is 5,983 yards behind Smith's mark of 18,355. Peterson looked solid in his team's 24-6 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1. He rushed for 96 yards and a score. However, it'll take a miracle for Peterson to close the gap and become the NFL's all-time leading rusher.

From Mike Florio of NBC Sports:

“I feel like it’s realistic you know very realistic,” Peterson said in a Tuesday appearance on the #PFTPM podcast. “In the great words of Kevin Garnett, ‘Anything is possible.’ So that’s how I view it. If I’m to continue to have success, stay injury-free and play three to four more years and I definitely see myself claiming that title and in order to achieve something you have to believe it, you know? So I’m a believer.”

Peterson is dreaming like he's never seen obstacles. Smith set the record in a fifteen-year career. Peterson is entering his thirteenth season at 33-years-old. Peterson would need to rush for nearly 1,500 yards a season to beat the record in four years. He hasn't rushed for over 1,000 since he ran for 1,485 in the 2015-16 season for the Minnesota Vikings. Peterson fell just short of Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record by 8 yards when he rumbled for 2,097 yards in his MVP season back in 2012.

You can't help but love Peterson's confidence. He has frequently proved that he has more in the tank when skeptics have claimed that he's washed up. While it's unlikely that Peterson will break Smith's record given the short shelf lives of running backs in the NFL, there's no denying that he'll go down as one of the best to ever do it when it's all said and done.
