Before the NFL Draft, we heard constant rumors of the Washington Redskins considering trading up to take a quarterback. It turns out that they didn't even have to.
Ohio State signal-caller Dwayne Haskins fell right into the Redskins' laps at No. 15, and now, Haskins will get a chance to compete for Washington's starting quarterback job, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said that Haskins will get “an opportunity without a doubt,” which does not come as much of a surprise given Washington's shaky situation under center heading into 2019.
Haskins will join veterans Case Keenum and Colt McCoy in the race for the starting quarterback job, as Alex Smith will likely be sidelined for all of 2019 while he recovers from a gruesome broken leg injury.
With neither Keenum nor McCoy exactly inspiring much confidence, you would have to assume that Haskins certainly stands a chance of winning the No. 1 job, but, at the same time, the Redskins probably don't want to rush their rookie quarterback.
Haskins is coming off of a brilliant sophomore campaign in which he threw for 4,831 yards, 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 70 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 174.1.
Known for his pocket presence and rocket arm, some have questioned Haskins' NFL potential due to his lack of mobility, but there is no denying his production at Ohio State.
Haskins was the third quarterback chosen on Thursday night, as Oklahoma's Kyler Murray went first overall to the Arizona Cardinals and Duke's Daniel Jones was picked by the New York Giants at No. 6.
