The Washington Redskins need some depth in the backfield as their running back unit has been ravaged by injuries. The team looked out for help in the free agent market to address the issue and decided to go for a legend in the form of Adrian Peterson.

Peterson has signed a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum if $1.015 million with Washington, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN via John Keim, today. If Washington fans need any more convincing that they’re not dreaming of the former NFL Most Valuable Player now being a member of the Redskins, here’s a photo of the running back donning the team’s threads.

The 33-year-old Adrian Peterson is out to prove that there’s still enough gas left in his tank. In Washington, he’ll get a significant opportunity to do just that after the Redskins saw rookie running back and projected starter Derrius Guice go down with a season-ending ACL injury in the preseason opener against the New England Patriots. In the following contest, Samaje Perine and Byron Marshall both sustained leg injuries, thus, thinning greatly the Redskins’ running back depth.

Other than Peterson, the Redskins have Rob Kelley, Chris Thompson, and Kapri Bibbs as the main figures left in Washington’s backfield, though, none of them is an inspiring option.

Peterson played a total of 10 games for the New Orleans Saints and the Arizona Cardinals last season and accumulated just 529 rushing yards, and two touchdowns on 156 carries before hitting the injured reserve with a neck injury.

Peterson will face his former team, the Arizona Cardinals, in Week 1 of the regular season.
