The Washington Redskins have suffered a slew of injuries to their backfield this offseason that has quickly tested their depth chart at the running back position in the first couple of weeks in the preseason.

According to Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network, this has landed former Pro Bowl running back Adrian Peterson another chance to continue his career with the Redskins.

Peterson had remained afloat in the free agent market in the last several months since being cut by the Arizona Cardinals back in March. He has remained physically prepared to play over that time that has helped him earn this opportunity to add to his illustrious career that should one day land him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Peterson was without a job for much of the offseason likely due to his age and string of injuries over the last couple of years.

In the 2017 season, the 33-year-old showed that he can still be a highly effective option out of the backfield when given the chance. Following the trade from the New Orleans Saints midseason to the Arizona Cardinals notching 448 rushing yards on 129 carries in six games. This was headlined by a pair of performances with more than 130 rushing yards before a neck injury prematurely ended his season. There may still be some concern with his durability, but he has proven over the course of his carer that he can be a productive factor.

Peterson is entering a situation where he will have to vie for playing time in similar fashion to how the situation was pitted with the Saints. Washington will likely give both Samaje Perine and Chris Thompson to the first crack to earn significant playing time at the position. Peterson will also have to battle with Rob Kelley to take the field as he remains the only other true competition at this point with both rookie Derrius Guice and Byron Marshall out of the mix due to injury.
