The Washington Redskins don’t expect to have one of their key players around for the start of training camp this week. According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport, left tackle Trent Williams is expected to be absent when training camp starts on Thursday, with concerns about his medical situation and contract with the team cited as reasons.

When discussing with @MikeGarafolo the expectation that #Redskins LT Trent Williams holds out, it was also important to note that Williams must be cleared to play. And considering the seriousness of his medical scare (with subsequent scalp surgeries), that is not a given.

According to Rapoport, Williams is dissatisfied with the way that Washington has handled his “medical situation” and combined with his desire for a new contract, he’ll be missing out.
When initially reported, Garafolo noted that it could be “quite a while” before Williams is back with the team, as Williams also didn’t show up for the teams minicamp in June.

A seven-time Pro Bowler, Williams has been one of the better left tackles in the league for some time, and seemingly wants to be paid like it. Currently, Williams still has two more years remaining on his contract, but doesn’t have anymore guaranteed money coming his way.
Recently, Williams had a medical scare related to a growth or tumor on his head that doctors were worried was malignant.
Fortunately for Williams, things turned out fine and he had the growth removed, but it’s unknown what exactly he’s unhappy with when it comes to Washington. As of now, it looks like things are still developing, so don’t expect to see Williams at training camp initially, if at all.
Should Williams continue to hold on for an extended amount of time, it'll be a tough blow for a Washington team looking to get rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins acclimated to the NFL.
