Early season predictions picked the Philadelphia Eagles as the favorites to tussle with the revamped Dallas Cowboys for NFC East divisional supremacy in the 2020 NFL season. However, Doug Pederson and his men look nowhere near the team that finished with a 9-7 record and marched into the playoffs last season. The squad looked miserable as of late and has yet to grab a win with two games already in the books.
Their struggles were rooted from quarterback Carson Wentz who failed to be effective in both outings. He tallied a total of 270 passing yards on an inefficient 24/42 clip along with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Eagles blew a 17-0 lead and eventually suffered a 27-17 defeat to the Washington Football Team who was deemed by many to be irrelevant this season.
The visiting team was also without their top rusher in sophomore Miles Sanders who was out due to a hamstring injury. The breakout candidate eventually made his way to the Eagles' roster in their second game against the Los Angeles Rams. He managed to generate a total of 95 rushing yards on 20 carries along with a scored touchdown in his season debut.
Wentz was also bothered by the Rams' tough defensive line as he recorded 242 passing yards on 26-of-43 passes completed with a rushing touchdown and two interceptions. Their performances weren't enough to close the gap as the Eagles mightily lost against the Rams on a 37-19 outcome.
The quarterback is currently tied for most interceptions with four through two weeks, ranks 29th in completion percentage with 58.8, and sat at the 32nd place in yards per attempt with 6.0. His 40.7% on-target pass rate is currently the lowest of any starter in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus.
Despite the struggles, an 0-2 start early in the season is still manageable and a comeback is not completely out of the picture for the Philly-based squad. They still have a chance to snag their first win as they face another winless team in a Week 3 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The 27-year old playmaker also needed to make better decisions in their upcoming games as his four total interceptions were all results of him forcing the throw. Wentz's performance and Sanders' emergence as a primary contributor on the Eagles' offense are key factors that will determine their success this season. The team can still pull of a surprise to slot rookie Jalen Hurts in if the fifth-year gunslinger continues to struggle under center.
Eagles fans can only hope that their team will be able to find their groove before they go on and face a string of heavy opponents in the San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Baltimore Ravens from Week 4 to Week 6.
Luckily for the Eagles, the divisional frontrunners in the Dallas Cowboys have also yet to reach their full potential as they find themselves in a 1-1 record thus far.
Pederson will have to make the necessary adjustments and start leading his time to victories before the time expires for Wentz and the rest of the Eagles.
