The Philadelphia Eagles surprised many fans when they snagged former Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts with the 53rd pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Many assumed that Hurts would be QB2 behind veteran Carson Wentz in the upcoming season, being the big name that he was in college football. However, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson has other plans in mind.

The Super Bowl LII champion coach recently bared his insights on Hurts' situation:

“It is probably a little more difficult with the quarterback position because with Carson and Nate, making sure these two guys get the reps they need,” Eagles coach Doug Pederson said Friday on 94 WIP Sports Radio. “You have to make sure Jalen is comfortable with the playbook and understands what we are doing as an offense, so the evaluation process might take a little bit longer with the quarterback, but we are going to do everything we can to make sure all of our guys are prepared. Jalen is no different.”

During the 2019 offseason, the Eagles signed Wentz to a four-year contract extension, keeping him under contract through the 2024 season. He eventually became productive in his first year of entering his new deal. Wentz finished the 2019 season with 4,039 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

However, the former North Dakota State product failed to show up when it mattered the most. In the NFC Wild Card game against the Seattle Seahawks, Wentz left the game with a head injury after playing just nine snaps. The Eagles eventually lost on a 17-9 outcome which ended their 2019 playoff campaign.

Given his injury history and the coronavirus situation, keeping a back-up quarterback will be a crucial option for the Eagles. Doug Pederson is currently eyeing four-year veteran Nate Sudfeld to back up Wentz in the upcoming season. He is coming off a wrist injury of his own which sidelined him for the majority of 2019.

As it stands today, Eagles nation will have to wait longer before seeing Hurts play under center for the team.
