The Philadelphia Eagles gave up multiple of assets to make Darius Slay their lockdown cornerback, and Slay is ready to embrace that challenge.

The former Detroit Lions standout said he is excited to match up against the best receivers in the league, embracing the notion of being a No. 1 corner (via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk):

“On a conference call with reporters on Thursday, Slay was asked if the plan was for him to follow the top wideout on opposing teams during games. Slay said he didn’t know what the decision would be and that he’ll do whatever Schwartz calls for, but added that he likes the ‘challenge' that comes with matching up with the opposition’s No. 1 target.

‘I want the game on me,' Slay said, via multiple reporters.”

Philly are certainly paying Slay to be that guy in 2020.

The Eagles traded a third- and fifth-round pick in this year's NFL Draft to the Lions in order to acquire Slay, subsequently signing him to a three-year, $50 million extension with $30 million in guaranteed money.

Slay led the NFL with eight interceptions in 2017, and he has made the Pro Bowl in three consecutive seasons. Opposing passers completed just under 47 percent of pass attempts when he was the nearest defender in 2018, and that number rose to just under 56 percent last season.

Philadelphia needed to address the cornerback spot after declining their option on safety Malcolm Jenkins and moving Jalen Mills to the safety position.

After years of questions in the secondary, the Eagles are banking on Slay being the shutdown guy who can help transform their defense. Needless to say, Slay is up for the challenge.
