New Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni inherits a roster that was plagued with injuries last season and finished with a 4-11-1 record, missing the playoffs. Among the players on that roster are quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts, who both started last season for the Eagles.
While Wentz regressed during the season, Hurts played well once he was given the start and could challenge the former for the starting quarterback role next season. But when asked if there will be a competition between the two signal-callers, Sirianni didn’t give any confirmation, instead complimenting both Wentz and Hurts when speaking to reporters.
The former offensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts revealed that he’s spoken to both Wentz and Hurts and called them both “top-notch” quarterbacks, per Zach Berman of The Athletic. But when asked if the 28-year-old will be starting under center next season, Sirianni merely said that he will need to evaluate the team’s entire roster before making any decisions.
As a follow-up to this, Sirianni didn't say whether there would be an open competition at QB. He continued to say the coaches need to evaluate the roster.
Sirianni, Eagles are preferring to keep this vague re: QBs. They're not using this as an opportunity to commit to Wentz. https://t.co/KlNhpO2q2s

The 39-year-old Sirianni, who takes over from Doug Pederson, also didn’t clarify if there will be a competition between the two quarterbacks in training camp heading into the season. Sirianni added that there is currently no timetable regarding when he will be able to name a starter at the position.
Asked if he'll have a QB competition at camp, Nick Sirianni said "I'm not ready to say that either way yet." Said he and staff need to evaluate all the tape first.

Sirianni, however, previously said that he has seen a lot of film about Wentz after working with head coach Frank Reich with the Colts since Reich was the Eagles’ prior offensive coordinator. The Eagles' new coach also praised Hurts for playing well in Philadelphia’s final games of the season and said that he feels great about having two good quarterbacks on the team.
Despite the positive comments from Sirianni, however, it seems as if it will be a while before the team names its starting quarterback for next season.
