Throughout much of the last few months, there has been some level of uncertainty surrounding when Pro Bowl quarterback Carson Wentz will be back on the field. He has continued to make progress in his recovery from a torn ACL and LCL since the injury occurred back in December.

The team has kept a positive approach and outlook on the situation with eyes toward Wentz being back on the field for the 2018 campaign. With that in mind, the Eagles have reportedly inked quarterback Joe Callahan to a deal on Wednesday afternoon, according to Mike Garafolo of The NFL Network.

This move now gives the team five quarterbacks under contract heading into training camp. The fact that the team explored the possibility of bringing aboard former Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett speaks to the level of uncertainty the Eagles still have with Wentz's recovery timetable. The addition of Callahan further secures the position under center with more depth at the position.

Callahan was an undrafted rookie from the 2016 NFL draft out of Wesley College that was on the active roster with the Green Bay Packers last season where he completed five of his seven attempts for 11 yards. He had previously spent much of the last two years with the Packers as a member of their practice squad. He has also spent time with the New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns over that span

Despite this signing, Nick Foles is in line to be the primary backup to Wentz given what he has shown on the field this past season helping lead the Eagles to a deep playoff run that was capped off by topping the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. What this latest move shows more than anything else is that the organization isn't entirely certain that Wentz will be ready in time for the season opener in September.
