The Philadelphia Eagles are bringing back a depth piece. The Eagles are re-signing tight end Richard Rodgers to a new two-year contract. The team announced the move Thursday, per Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.com.

Rodgers spent last year with the Eagles after spending the first four years of his career with the Green Bay Packers. The California product was originally a third-round pick in 2014. Terms of the deal weren't immediately announced, although it's fair to assume the Eagles didn't break the bank here.

Rodgers barely played last season, but apparently the Eagles liked what they saw from him. Rodgers struggled with injuries and appeared in just seven games. In those seven contests he was used mostly as a blocker, and caught just one pass for seven yards.

He did have some decent years in Green Bay, showing that he is a capable receiver. In 2015 he had 58 catches for 510 yards and eight touchdowns, so he has some potential. Still only 27, it's possible Rodgers' best days are ahead of him.

Last offseason Rodgers signed a one-year, $880,000 contract with the club. Behind Zach Ertz on the depth chart, Rodgers isn't likely to get too much action as a pass-catcher. The Eagles haven't been very active in free agency, especially on offense. They'll mostly be returning with the same team from last year.
