The Philadelphia Eagles defense allowed San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to torch them for a spectacular touchdown run. They may have suffered a major casualty in the process. Cornerback Darius Slay was seen limping off the field after taking a helmet to the knee, via Troy Renck of Denver7:

It is easy to see where the contact was initiated as the helmet of the pulling offensive lineman came down on his knee with a cut block. The nature of the injury will surely spark some debate regarding such blocks outside the tackle box.
The Eagles made quite an investment in order to bring Slay to town by parting ways with a third-round and fifth-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft. They then followed it up by signing him to a three-year deal worth $50 million, which includes $30 million guaranteed.
While it is encouraging to see that Slay has some security in light of the injury, his potential absence would leave a notable void for Philadelphia to fill in the secondary. Much has been said about the turnover issue they have on offense with quarterback Carson Wentz, however, the defense also failed to come up with any takeaways of their own heading into Week 4.
Slay has attributed the lack of interceptions to the transition to man coverage on defense upon his arrival. Although he may be optimistic about the turnovers eventually coming their way, his in jury will only raise further concern.
Article Continues BelowShould the Eagles remain winless, it will be interesting to see how they go about Slay's recovery.
