Minkah Fitzpatrick seems to have found a home with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and much of that is due to the fact that the Steelers have catered to him more than the Miami Dolphins ever did.

The Dolphins selected Fitzpatrick, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, in the first round (11th pick overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft.

However, Miami, which was then led by head coach Adam Gase, played Fitzpatrick a whole lot of cornerback during his rookie campaign, which was obviously not his natural position. As a result, Fitzpatrick struggled.

Gase was no longer in South Beach this year, but the Dolphins ended up trading Fitzpatrick to the Steelers early in the season. The move has paid dividends for Fitzpatrick, as he was named to the Pro Bowl courtesy of a stat-line that includes 59 tackles, five interceptions, a couple of forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, nine passes defended and a defensive touchdown.

Now the coach of the New York Jets, Gase acknowledges that playing out of position hurt Fitzpatrick in Miami:

“He’s playing a different spot. He’s playing the spot he was drafted for,” Gase said of Fitzpatrick in Pittsburgh, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “We had a lot of injuries, so he had to play nickel and corner, never got to post safety until the end of the year. They have him in the post, allow him to be aggressive, and he’s done that. The ball finds him.”

Fitzpatrick looks like a future star, and in turn, it looks like the Dolphins made a big mistake by trading him.
