The NFL and the NFLPA recently announced changes to the league's COVID protocols as the virus continues to spread around the NFL. Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward, who is the Steelers' union representative, made a shocking comment about the COVID protocols while tossing the NFLPA under the bus.
“If all the league’s quarterbacks are getting together and deciding on the league we are not in a good position because then defenses will suffer from here on out,” Heyward said. “I don’t know if there was a call. I would like to think as the voter rep you find out a little more information beforehand.”
As the article from SteelersWire notes, there was some speculation around the league that some quarterbacks had led the charge for the changes to the NFLPA's COVID protocols, essentially leaving other players in the dark.
Article Continues BelowIt sure sounds like this is how it went down, according to Steelers union rep Cameron Heyward, who claims that he wasn't fully notified by the NFLPA about the changes to the COVID protocols, alluding to the fact that as a voter, he would have liked to have known more about the situation.
This is massive if true. Heyward is basically saying that a small fraction of players (quarterbacks) decided for the entire NFLPA on how the COVID protocols were going to change. The Steelers star also called out Cleveland Browns offensive lineman J.C. Tretter for pushing for the Cleveland game to be postponed. It sounds like the NFLPA, designed to bring the players together, did anything but that in this situation.
It's clear that Cameron Heyward isn't pleased with how the vote on the COVID protocols went between the NFL and the NFLPA. He's letting everyone know it, too.
