Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner reached out and helped a girl with a breathing apparatus fulfill a small wish by giving the young fan a tour of the team's locker room after training camp concluded on Saturday.
Conner, 24, is the Steelers' primary RB entering his third season in the NFL and second year as the full-time back after Le'Veon Bell's holdout and subsequently signing elsewhere as a free agent. The Steelers drafted the 6-foot-1 Conner in the third round of the 2017 draft after a rocky time with the Pittsburgh Panthers and college. Conner tore his MCL in his junior seasons at Pitt and was later diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in December 2015.
Now cancer-free, Conner is giving back to his native Pittsburgh's fanbase (via Jeremy Fowler and ESPN):
“Obviously just looking at her, she has been through some things and she was dealing with some things with the braces she had on,” said Conner, who doesn't know her condition. “So she appreciated it more than most of some other fans out here who want autographs for the wrong reasons.”
“She thought she was the coolest person in the world,” Conner said with a smile. “It was cool to see.”
Conner also added he tries to take advantage of his “platform,” being a high profile player in the NFL, and that it takes “five minutes” to make somebody's day.
Last season, Conner rushed for 973 yards, scored 12 rushing touchdowns, and averaged 4.5 yards per carry in 13 games.
