Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster has cleared concussion protocol, but head coach Mike Tomlin says that his status against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday is up in the air, per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk.
Smith-Schuster, who did not practice on Wednesday, is also dealing with a knee issue, an injury he suffered on the same play as the concussion during the Steelers' Week 11 loss to the Browns.
In addition to Smith-Schuster, running back James Conner also did not participate in Wednesday's practice as a result of a shoulder injury that kept him out of Pittsburgh's win over the Cincinnati Bengals this past weekend. Meanwhile, cornerback Artie Burns did not practice because of a knee injury.
“I don’t know what their status will be [for Sunday] as I stand here,” Tomlin said of Smith-Schuster, Conner and Burns. “We’ll go through our normal procedures in terms of looking at those guys and seeing if they’re good enough to participate in practice and then go from there. But I don’t have a lot of clarity as I’m standing here regarding those three men.”
While the Steelers did not need Smith-Schuster nor Conner to defeat the lowly Bengals in Week 12, they will almost surely need at least one of their key offensive players to deal with Cleveland on Sunday, especially considering that Pittsburgh is making a change at quarterback, going from Mason Rudolph to Devlin Hodges.
The Steelers are 6-5 and are smack dab in the middle of the chase for the second Wild Card spot in the AFC.
