The recently-concluded 2021 NFL Draft led Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster to reminisce on his own draft experience from four years ago. Apparently, his most memorable moment from the proceedings was when he received an unlikely call from McDonald's before he even got picked by the Steelers in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
“I got a phone call and it was my Postmates from McDonald’s,” Smith-Schuster recently told PFT PM when asked about the one lingering memory from his draft experience.”
“It was outside. I got so hype because on that day you tell your friends, you tell your family, ‘Hey, don’t message me on this day between this time and this time. I’m expecting phone calls from a team or head coach or owners.’
Despite giving an early heads up to his friends and family, an unusual call still managed to hit his number on the day of the draft.

I was like, ‘Man before I go to the NFL, I’m going to have one of my favorite meals from McDonald’s.’ Ordered McDonald’s, I get a phone call. I’m thinking like, ‘It’s a coach.’ I’m looking at the area code I’m not familiar with. It’s Laguna Beach or Newport Beach. And it’s a number I’m not familiar with, and I answer and it’s ‘Hey, your food’s outside.’ I’m just like, ‘Hello? Coach?’ That’s probably the funniest moment from my draft day I can remember.”
Even with the delay, everything still worked out for Smith-Schuster as he was eventually nabbed by the Steelers with the 62nd pick. Over the years, he has become a staple on the team and has emerged as one of the Steelers' top offensive weapons.
Despite his rise to stardom as an NFL talent, the past couple of years have been rough for the former USC standout on the field. After an injury-marred campaign in 2019, Smith-Schuster found himself being dealt with heavy criticism due to his arrogance along with his triggering TikTok dances on their opponents' home turfs in 2020.
The off-field distraction eventually contributed to the Steelers' downfall as they suffered a major letdown in the postseason with a Wild Card round exit against their division rival, the Cleveland Browns. Despite everything, the 24-year-old receiver still decided to return to the Steelers as he inked a one-year contract heading to the next season.
Amid the ups and downs of his young professional career thus far, JuJu Smith-Schuster is definitely raring to do better as he aims for a bounce-back campaign in 2021 with the Steelers
