The Pittsburgh Steelers are headed to the playoffs, and you likely knew that before their head coach did. That's right, head coach Mike Tomlin had his eyes shut rather than glued to the television during the game that determined his team's postseason fate. The Los Angeles Chargers and the Las Vegas Raiders nearly tied Sunday night, which would have secured both teams a spot in the playoffs, knocking the Steelers out of contention.
According to NFL reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala, Tomlin didn't see the end of the game Sunday night because he “dozed off.”
Mike Tomlin admits that he "dozed off" at the end of the #Chargers–#Raiders game. Knowing now how close it got, and that a tie would've kept his #Steelers home and out of the playoffs, he jokes, "I'm probably better off not having watched it."

Despite wild theories of a potential “alliance” and plan to tie, the Raiders came out victorious. The AFC West matchup played out shortly after the Steelers' dramatic win over the Baltimore Ravens. Ben Roethlisberger and Pittsburgh secured their ninth win of the season with a field goal in overtime, the same way that the Raiders pulled out their overtime win.
All of the excitement must have really tired out Tomlin, because he couldn't even keep his eyes open to see if his team was going to be golfing or playing football during the postseason. The 49-year-old has been the head coach of the Steelers since 2007, and according to him, it was “probably better” that he didn't see how close the game ended up being.
