The Pittsburgh Steelers fell to 1-3 after another ugly performance by Ben Roethlisberger vs. the Green Bay Packers, but that didn't stop head coach Mike Tomlin from giving his longtime quarterback another vote of confidence when speaking with media on Tuesday. Tomlin also said Roethlisberger is dealing with a âhip issue,â but said that Roethlisberger âabsolutelyâ is the best option for the Steelers at quarterback.
Article Continues BelowâThere's probably a component of just being in your late 30s and playing this game and playing that position and particularly when you're not playing winning football,â said Tomlin of Roethlisberger. âYou get somewhat one dimensional, there's collateral damage that gets associated with that for him and for us.â
Ben Roethlisberger ranks 25th in the NFL in QBR, and the Steelers have lost three straight games following their Week 1 win over the Buffalo Bills. Pittsburgh now faces what feels like a must-win game Sunday vs. the Denver Broncos, who are 3-1 so far through their first four games. If the Steelers were to lose again and fall to 1-4, their chances at a potential postseason berth would seemingly begin to slip by the wayside.
Tomlin will be faced with tough decisions should the Steelers continue to sputter, though the Steelers other options at quarterback don't exactly scream improvement. Dwayne Haskins and Mason Rudloph, who make up the rest of the Steelers depth chart at QB, have neither proven much of anything outside inconsistency at the NFL level, and handing over the keys to a veteran team that is trying to win games to a young, unproven quarterback is tough sell to both the locker room and the fans to say the least.
