In spite of the fact that the Pittsburgh Steelers may be on the verge of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2013, head coach Mike Tomlin is safe, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Tomlin's job has been a topic of discussion this week after a devastating loss to the New Orleans Saints last Sunday that put the Steelers on the brink of elimination.
Tomlin made a rather colossal blunder down the stretch of the game, opting to fake a punt on a critical fourth down, resulting in the Saints taking over with a terrific field position and marching down the field for a touchdown that would ultimately be the game's deciding score.
The 46-year-old is in his 12th year as Pittsburgh's head coach, and throughout his tenure, he boasts a gaudy 124-66-1 record to go along with a Super Bowl title and two Super Bowl appearances.
Article Continues BelowHowever, since reaching the Super Bowl for the second time during the 2010-11 campaign and falling to the Green Bay Packers, the Steelers have not had a whole lot of postseason success.
As a matter of fact, last year, Pittsburgh won 13 games and was considered by many to be the favorite to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl, but the Steelers went on to lose in the divisional round of the playoffs to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Pittsburgh enters Sunday's season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals with a record of 8-6-1. In order for the Steelers to make the playoffs, they will need to beat the Bengals and the Cleveland Browns will need to take out the Baltimore Ravens. Another scenario involves Pittsburgh beating Cincinnati and the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans tying, but that is obviously very unlikely.
