The Pittsburgh Steelers worked out free agent safety Jermaine Whitehead on Monday, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 26-year-old Whitehead was released by the Cleveland Browns last week after threatening social-media accounts with various tweets.

The 5-foot-11 Whitehead was initially signed as an undrafted free agent in 2015 by the San Francisco 49ers before being cut and signed to the practice squad. The Auburn product then spent two-plus seasons with the Green Bay Packers after signing and being waived by the Baltimore Ravens.

Green Bay released Whitehead in 2018 after an incident stemming from an in-game ejection where he slapped New England Patriots center David Andrews. Whitehead was picked up by the Browns off waivers last year and was waived this past week.

The social media platform suspended Whitehead after sending charged tweets, like threatening to fight one user and kill another.

Whitehead was released by Cleveland Monday last week, with a team official citing his online behavior as inappropriate.

“Jermaine Whitehead’s social media posts following today’s game were totally unacceptable and highly inappropriate,” a Browns spokesperson said, per Jake Trotter of ESPN. “We immediately spoke with Jermaine upon learning of these comments. The Browns in no way condone that type of language or behavior. This matter will be further addressed internally.”

While the Steelers have a star defensive back in Minkah Fitzpatrick—traded from the Miami Dolphins in an exchange for multiple picks, including sending a first-rounder to South Beach—Pittsburgh is doing its due diligence looking at free agent talent. However, should they sign Whitehead, controversy over the move is unpreventable.
