Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins may have a fully-guaranteed $84 million deal, but not all NFL players are quite so lucky. Unlike the other major sports, NFL contracts are mostly not guaranteed. But Todd Gurley wants to change that.

Per TMZ Sports, the Los Angeles Rams’ star running back says all NFL players should get the Cousins-style guaranteed contracts. But as to what it would take for the players to finally get those guaranteed deals, Gurley brought up the dreaded “L” word: lockout.

Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Russell Okung reignited the debate about guaranteed contracts by posting an impassioned argument for them on Twitter over the weekend.

“Considering football’s level of brute, immanent physicality, high turnover as well as the short life cycle of its participants, it would seem to me that NFL players are in the most need of fully guaranteed contracts,” Okung said.

The NFL is no stranger to strikes, but the last time it got to the point where regular-season games were lost due to work stoppage was back in 1987.

The current NFL collective bargaining agreement ends in 2021, and NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith has already made noise about a strike looking likely once that happens.

Coincidentally, Gurley could still be up for a long-term deal by 2021 if he can’t come to terms on an extension with the Rams, who still haven’t opened talks this offseason, and they franchise him. If the players somehow get their way, the next long-term contract Gurley signs could just be of the fully-guaranteed variety that he’s dreaming of.
