Somehow, through magic we can only assume, the New Orleans Saints are a good team this season. It isn't only the usual high-powered offense, led by Drew Brees, getting the job done. New Orleans now, all of a sudden, has a stout defense.
According to the veteran gunslinger, the Saints are only just starting to get good.
“I’m just telling you, I see this team every day. We’re just scratching the surface,” Brees said, via Peter King of TheMMQB.com.
“They say a quarterback’s best friend is a great running game and a great defense,” Brees said Sunday. “We’ve been getting both.
Few people projected New Orleans to be good this season. Yet here are the Saints with an overall record of 6-2.
Article Continues BelowWe can credit Brees, who does deserve his fair share of it, but New Orleans all of a sudden having a good defense is certainly a huge factor. And, oddly enough, it is a rookie who is largely responsible for this improvement.
When the Saints drafted Marshon Lattimore, the 11th overall pick, he was expected to be a bit of a developmental player. One that would certainly play a lot as a rookie, but not the dude who is turning out to be one of the better cornerbacks in the entire league. He is probably the leader for defensive rookie of the year.
That's what makes this team so scary. They have a proven, Hall of Fame-level QB in Drew Brees. Elsewhere, there is a good mix of young talent and veterans. The former of those groupings, the young kids, should only get better as the season progresses.
