In what is set up to be one of the biggest matchups between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams in recent memory, the 49ers are still waiting to hear from their head coach, Kyle Shanahan, (even though he already knows) on who will be the starting at quarterback for the game. Will it be the rookie, Trey Lance, who led the team to a victory last week over the Houston Texans, or will it be Jimmy Garoppolo, who is coming back from a torn thumb ligament?

Well, the answer didn't come out on Friday and that makes Garoppolo officially a game-time decision. Most likely the team will test his injured thumb during pregame warmups at SoFi stadium and then make their decision after that. Officially, though, Garoppolo is listed as questionable–along with starting left tackle Trent Williams (elbow).

If “Jimmy G” is forced to sit out and Lance is thrust into the starting job, the Rams will likely not mind it. While Lance has flashed some running ability in his two+ career NFL games, he is not the type of passer that Garoppolo is. Also, Garoppolo is the type of passer that typically eats the Rams up–and he has done so in the past–by getting the ball out of his hands quickly and into the hands of his playmakers George Kittle and Deebo Samuel. That negates the Rams' pass-rush and it also takes Jalen Ramsey out of the equation a bit because the 49ers will throw their screens to Samuel or Kittle depending on the side that Ramsey is not on. Safe to say, the 49ers–and their fans–are hoping to have Garoppolo under center against the Rams.
