Regardless, the coaching staff seems to prefer Garoppolo right now. Even so, the veteran quarterback reveals what his injured thumb is really like.
According to Nick Wagoner, Jimmy Garoppolo is in some serious pain in regards to his injured thumb. The 49ers have been doing everything they can to get him back under center. However, if the pain is this bad, resting him another week would be for the best.

It's a tough situation for the 49ers, as they need to win to keep their playoff hopes alive. At the same time, San Francisco needs to be realistic with their expectations of Garoppolo and the veteran quarterback knows that, per Nick Wagoner.

For now, Trey Lance is in line for another start in a must-win game for the 49ers. He looked solid in Week 17, which bodes well for the franchise's future. The coaching staff will continue to monitor Jimmy Garoppolo's thumb, but it's hard to imagine him playing on Sunday. Hopefully, it heals soon, especially if this team makes the postseason.
We'll see how it all plays out. It's coming down to the final week to determine the playoff order.
