Bruce Irvin was released by the Oakland Raiders in a surprise move and immediately became one of the most sought-after free agents available this late in the season. He ended up signing with the Atlanta Falcons, but the San Francisco 49ers put on a full-court press to sign him. Despite bigger offers elsewhere, Irvin wanted to return home to the city where he was born.
According to a report from Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports, the 49ers “went hard” after Irvin before he agreed to a deal with the Falcons.
The #49ers went hard after DE Bruce Irvin, according to a source. Irvin, whom the Raiders released on Monday, received interest from about 10 teams. He signed a one-year deal this morning with the Falcons, which means he will be available as a free agent in March.

San Francisco would not have been an ideal landing spot for Irvin, mainly because they are not competing at this point in the season. They have a lot of talent moving forward, but on a one-year deal there was no reason to sign somewhere that he would not be able to compete for a playoff spot.
Article Continues BelowAtlanta has struggled at times this season, but adding Bruce Irvin will be a much-needed boost for their defense.
Irvin played in eight games with the Raiders this season, recording six tackles, 3.0 sacks, and a forced fumble. He isn't one of the most lethal pass rushers in the league, but he is capable of making plays.
Looking ahead to the upcoming offseason, Irvin is going to be an intriguing free agent option for quite a few teams. He still has a few good years of football left in him and there was obviously interest in him before he signed with the Falcons.
Expect to see Irvin come through with a good tenure with the Falcons. He will be asked to step up and take on a leadership role and will rise to the occasion for his new team.
