The drawn-out Aaron Rodgers saga might finally be nearing an end. With rumors of the veteran quarterback flying left and right in free agency, Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II hinted that his team might be nearing a deal with the former four-time MVP.
As one of the many executives in Florida for the annual NFL owners meeting, Rooney revealed that the Steelers are nearing a deal with Rodgers, per Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The Steelers became the favorites to land Rodgers in free agency once the New York Giants signed Russell Wilson in March.
“Art Rooney II said he has a good feeling about Aaron Rodgers and the signs are ‘pointing in that direction' of him signing with the Steelers,” Dulac tweeted.
Rodgers, 41, has had multiple meetings with the Steelers that have gone well. He also reportedly worked out with DK Metcalf, whom Pittsburgh acquired from the Seattle Seahawks just days before the new league year began.
Since parting ways with the New York Jets, Rodgers has also been closely connected to the Cleveland Browns and Giants. His potential signing would end the Steelers' quarterback search after Pittsburgh let Wilson and Justin Fields walk in free agency.
Steelers' quarterback situation ahead of 2025 NFL Draft

Until a potential Rodgers signing is official, the Steelers continue to have one of the most uncertain quarterback situations in the league. Only two quarterbacks are currently on their roster — Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson — neither of which are suitable long-term starters. Pittsburgh signed both Rudolph and Thompson in free agency after letting Wilson and Fields ink deals elsewhere.
The Steelers have undoubtedly considered addressing the quarterback position in the 2025 NFL Draft, where they hold the No. 21 pick. However, none of the available prospects are projected to fall in that range, particularly with Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart seemingly rising out of their range each day.
The team's unfortunate position in the draft, combined with its wait-and-see approach in free agency, leaves few options other than Rodgers. With the free agency class already thin to begin with, the Steelers' two starters in 2024 were among the best available players on the market. Choosing to let both sign with differing New York teams limited their options, functionally leaving the decision up to Rodgers.
