The Minnesota Vikings got lucky last season when Case Keenum was able to step in and guide the Vikings to the NFC Championship Game. But the question became as soon as the game was over whether they wanted to keep him. If they do, it will not be with the franchise tag.

According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, the Vikings will not use the franchise tag on Case Keenum. This means that he will become a free agent when free agency begins. That is if the team does not sign him to an extension by ahead of time.

There has been a lot of speculation about the Vikings and their quarterback situation. Sam Bradford was brought in to be the bridge until Teddy Bridgewater was healthy enough to play again. But Bradford couldn’t stay healthy which opened the door for Keenum.

Keenum had flopped as a starter for the Houston Texans and Los Angeles Rams, so no one expected him to do well when he stepped in early in the season. But he did.

Now, as NFL free agency approaches, the Vikings have three quarterbacks on their roster that will become free agents if they are not signed to extensions before then. But who do they keep?

Bradford is likely out due to his age (relative to the other two) and injury history. That leaves the guy they drafted to become the face of the franchise (Teddy Bridgewater) and the guy that played unexpectedly well last season (Case Keenum).

Choose wisely, and the team will back in the Super Bowl mix next season. Make the wrong choice, and it’s back to the drawing board.
