Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio deleted his Twitter account on Saturday amid controversy over a tweet and recent comments he made about the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the United States Capitol. ESPN's John Keim says neither the Commanders nor Del Rio have any comment on the coach deleting his account.
Del Rio is expected to address the Commanders Tuesday on the matter. Keim reports âmultiple sources close to the players have said they don't think it will be an issue with his players.â Star Chase Young apparently is willing to move past this because Del Rio is âhis guy,â and Jonathan Allen came out and said he doesn't care about Del Rio's opinion as long as he works hard at his job.
Del Rio started the firestorm with a tweet in reply to Norm Eisen of the Brookings Institution earlier in the week. The tweet complained that the 2020 âsummer of riotsâ during protests of George Floyd's murder at the hands of police weren't getting enough attention while there has been much so focus on the Jan. 6 investigation. The Jan. 6 committee just began public hearings on their investigation Thursday.
Article Continues BelowThe Commanders coach doubled down when speaking to the media on Wednesday, ultimately referring to Jan. 6 as a âdust-up.â While Del Rio tried to say he was just expressing his opinion, there's mountains of evidence showing just how wrong he is about what happened before, during and after that day.
Del Rio met with Commanders head coach Ron Rivera after making those comments and put out an apology on Twitter. He then met with Rivera again on Friday and got fined $100,000, which will be donated to the United States Capitol Police Memorial Fund.
And, now, Jack Del Rio has deleted his account.
