The Boston Bruins were without superstar center Patrice Bergeron on Wednesday night in Minnesota. His presence was missed, as the Bruins dropped 4-2 to the Wild. Boston head coach Bruce Cassidy provided an update on Bergeron that leaves as many questions as it did answers.
Prior to Wednesday's loss, Cassidy said “A previous injury has re-emerged and there is risk for infection… we are being cautious.” Cassidy went on to say that Bergeron will miss at least the next two games out of precaution. That left many wondering if Bergeron could potentially be out longer than just the next two games.

Boston is in the middle of a playoff race. A playoff spot is all but locked up for the Bruins, but their sights are set much higher than that. Even though Boston is in fourth place in the stacked Atlantic Division, they are only two points behind the Toronto Maple Leafs and five points back of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Eastern Conference as a whole is completely loaded. Seven of the eight best records in the entire NHL are in the east. It's just bad luck for Boston that they have the east-leading Florida Panthers, Lightning and Maple Leafs in the same division. But that makes any missed games by Bergeron that much more important.
Bergeron is long in the tooth, but still playing at a high level in his 18th season with Boston. He has 17 goals and 28 assists for the Bruins. His presence on the power play has been particularly crucial, as he has 20 power play points. Boston's next game is Friday against the Winnipeg Jets.
