Jordan Matthews was released by the San Francisco 49ers after the preseason concluded and rejoined the team at the beginning of October. Ahead of Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers, San Francisco has cut Matthews—again.

The veteran wideout was released by San Francisco to make room for long-snapper Kyle Nelson. That goes to show how expendable Matthews was at the wide receiver position.

When the 49ers were able to acquire Emmanuel Sanders via trade from the Denver Broncos, Matthews' value took a major hit. With Matthews heading to free agency, San Francisco will start Sanders, Marquise Goodwin, and Dante Pettis at wide receiver.

Along with those guys, Kyle Shanahan also has rookie Deebo Samuel, Kendrick Bourne, and Richie James. Prior to being released, Matthews only played in three offensive snaps for the 49ers this season.

Matthews was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 42nd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. The Vanderbilt product would spend his first three seasons in the NFL in Philadelphia before playing with the Buffalo Bills in 2017. Then, he would have a second stint with the Eagles in 2018.

With that being said, could Matthews be on his way back to the City of Brotherly Love? The Eagles have been rumored to be in the receiver market with DeSean Jackson taking longer than expected to recover from his injury.

Whether it is the Eagles or not, Matthews will undoubtedly draw interest from other teams. At 27-years-old, Matthews can still provide solid production at wide receiver for a team in need of a pass-catcher.
