United States sprinter Noah Lyles took the track and field world championships by storm, breaking the record for the fastest time ran in the 200 meters by an American man. It was a record previously held by the legendary Michael Johnson. Lyles, who ran a 19.31 in the 200, gave a shout-out to Johnson on Twitter after breaking his record.

That is an epic photo. Two of the fastest Americans ever, indeed. It's amazing that they were able to snap the picture quick enough with Noah Lyles and Michael Johnson in the frame.

In all seriousness, it's great to see a top sprinter emerging for the United States at the track and field championships, one who looks to be a legitimate challenger to Johnson. Not only that, but also a legitimate challenger to the world.

Lyles' 19.31 seconds is the third-fastest 200-meter time ever, behind Jamaica's Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake.

For years, many believed that Michael Johnson's record would never be approached. Even the scoreboard wasn't buying it last night when Noah Lyles broke the record.

After the race, the scoreboard clock showed Lyles' time at 19.32 seconds, which would have tied Johnson's mark from the 1996 Olympics. As Lyles admitted, he was briefly concerned about what his actual time was. Here's what he said, via ESPN.

“I was very self-concerned about whether that number was going to turn from a ‘2' to a ‘1,'” Lyles conceded after Thursday night's history-making win.

Of course, anyone would be, considering just how unbreakable Johnson's record seemed to be. However, Lyles really did it, earning the United States a sweep of the 200 meters and 22nd medal through seven days at the track and field championships.

It was a special night for Noah Lyles.
