It's safe to say Magic Johnson was impressed by the Denver Nuggets' performance in their season-opener against the Los Angeles Lakers.

While Johnson certainly hoped that the Lakers would spoil the Nuggets' ring and banner night, it's hard for him not to give credit where it is due. Besides, Nikola Jokic and co. did play really well, giving the Purple and Gold no chance at all. Even Anthony Davis, despite his terrific start, couldn't make an impact in the second half of the game as Michael Malone's men completely controlled the contest.

The Lakers legend had high praises for the Nuggets, particularly on Malone and the duo of Jokic and Jamal Murray.

Johnson hailed the Denver tactician as the “best” in the NBA when it comes to maximizing his player's strengths. He used Aaron Gordon as an example, with the former Orlando Magic forward playing his best basketball since arriving in Mile High City. On Tuesday against LA, Gordon tallied 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and one block to help the Nuggets take the 119-107 victory.

“Coach Michael Malone is the best coach in the NBA on playing to his player’s strengths. He has Aaron Gordon playing the best basketball I’ve ever seen him play, continuing last year’s Playoffs run!” Johnson exclaimed.

As for Jokic and Murray, Johnson admitted that their pick-and-roll combo stands above all others in the NBA.

“The Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray pick-and-roll combination is the best in the entire league! They can do everything off the pick: shoot, pass, dribble, and drive,” the Lakers legend added.

After the Nuggets' spectacular display at home, it's hard to argue with Magic Johnson's points. Put simply, Michael Malone, Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray showed the Lakers and everyone watching why they are the reigning NBA champions.

Denver is the team to beat this 2023-24, and that was made clear to Johnson, the Lakers and the rest of the NBA.
