When Nikola Jokic signed that multi-year max extension with the Denver Nuggets over the summer, it was the ultimate indication that he had become the team’s cornerstone superstar. However, it appears that prior to this becoming official, the 23-year-old had a bit of struggle in coming to terms with becoming the team’s alpha dog.

According to ESPN’s Zach Lowe, it was actually veteran teammate Paul Millsap who helped Jokic wholeheartedly accept his new role with the team.

“Nikola Jokic is a star who needs to improve his defense. Gary Harris is a rock-solid two-way wing. And Paul Millsap is the ultimate fill-the-gaps big who nudged Jokic — by way of a late-season heart-to-heart, team sources say — into undisputed alpha dog position.”

Jokic is unquestionably the Nuggets’ most prized possession. The organization will be building around him for years to come, and in order for him to become an effective leader, the first step would be for him to accept the responsibilities that have been bestowed upon him.

Fortunately for the team, Millsap, who is a proven All-Star and is/was arguably centerpiece material himself, did not let his ego get in the way. The 32-year-old understands his role in the team, and that given the position he is in, he was absolutely the right man to give Jokic the nudge he needed.

This is definitely great to hear for Nuggets supporters, but whether or not it will translate to the team establishing itself as a serious contender in the league, remains to be seen.
