The Oregon State Beavers take on the Utah Utes. Check out our college basketball odds series for our Oregon State Utah prediction and pick. Find how to watch Oregon State Utah.

The Utah Utes are still in good position to make the NCAA Tournament. They have had a good season. They have been better than expected. They won their big rivalry game against the BYU Cougars. Coach Craig Smith is developing players and making good choices on how to create a working rotation. The Utes were supposed to be trailing USC, UCLA, and Colorado in the Pac-12 Conference standings at this point in the season. They were supposed to be an NIT team with an outside chance of getting into the Big Dance. They have been better than that.

However, it's only mid-January. Utah has a lot of games left to play, and a lot of weeks in which it must maintain its position if not improve it. It would be frustrating for Utah to put itself in position to make the NCAA Tournament and then not capitalize on the opportunity. The basketball program which played in the national championship game 26 years ago, in 1998, used to be prominent in college basketball, but it hasn't been much of a factor for the last seven years. Making the NCAAs would represent a huge bounce-back for Utah, but after losing to Stanford this past weekend, the Utes lost a measure of leverage. They have to make sure they don't slip any more than they already have. This sets up a crucial game against Oregon State. If the Utes lose, their resume will take a massive hit.

Why Oregon State Could Cover the Spread

The spread is very large, at 15.5 points. Oregon State isn't good, but it can lose by 15 and still cover. Utah played poorly at Stanford this past weekend. The Utes have had some bright moments this season but are not entering this game in good form. That is certainly something to keep in mind from a betting perspective. The Pac-12 has not been good on an overall level, which means that even though Utah has been one of the better teams in the conference, the Utes don't deserve too much trust from bettors.

Why Utah Could Cover the Spread

The Utes are a dramatically better team than Oregon State. Start there. They're playing at home. Continue there. Utah is also coming off that bad loss at Stanford and should be highly motivated to play a much better game versus an inferior opponent. Utah should play well, and if the Utes play well, it's hard to see how Oregon State will meaningfully threaten them. One could make an argument that Utah is the second-best team in the Pac-12, certainly no worse than third behind Arizona and Oregon. Oregon State is clearly one of the worst teams in the Pac-12. There is a wide gulf between the teams, and the game is on Utah's home floor. There really isn't more one has to say about this matchup.

Final Oregon State-Utah Prediction & Pick

The Utes are very good at home. They crushed Washington State by over 20 in Salt Lake City. They should be able to do the same to Oregon State.

Final Oregon State-Utah Prediction & Pick: Utah -15.5
