Add another one to Adam Gase's growing list of unintentional viral moments. The notoriously oddball head coach was caught on the television broadcast of the New York Jets' preseason opener on Thursday night inhaling smelling salts on the sideline, presumably fulfilling his desire for a jolt of energy during his debut leading gang green.

It's not entirely uncommon for players to use smelling salts before games, and the clichéd story-telling trope of a trainer pulling them out to revive an injured player isn't a total departure from reality in the most extreme situations. But a coach taking smelling salts on the sideline? In anticipation of a preseason game? Gase is sure to draw some unwanted attention here, and rightfully so. This may the be first time in NFL history smelling salts were used by a coach on the field.
Fortunately for Gase, he's not completely unaccustomed to navigating that coming wave of media scrutiny. At his introductory press conference with the Jets in January, the 41-year-old became the sports world's meme of the moment for his intensely-focused gaze and accompanying random body movements, which some described as a twitch.
Gase replaces the ousted Todd Bowles as New York's head coach. In three seasons as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, he went 23-25, making the playoffs in his debut campaign of 2016.
