Indiana Pacers star shooting guard Victor Oladipo has informed the franchise he's committed to them and doesn't want a trade, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Trade rumors have been swirling around Oladipo for some time now. There was also drama this week when a report came out claiming he asked opposing players about joining their teams. This set off even more drama involving Oladipo's sister and Myles Turner on Twitter.
Oladipo's agent shut that report down on Friday morning. Then, Oladipo took it upon himself to quiet all the speculation:
“I know there have been people saying that I have asked players to trade for me. That's just not true, period. I love my teammates, I cherish the state of Indiana and I'm focused on leading this franchise to a title,” Oladipo told The Athletic.
Oladipo is set to be a free agent in 2021. He's not expected to sign an extension this offseason due to what the Pacers can offer. The max extension he can sign is a four-year deal worth nearly $113 million. In 2021, the 28-year-old is eligible for a five-year deal worth $195.6 million with Indiana, or a four-year, $145 million deal with a new team.
There's a decent chance Oladipo doesn't get one of those maximum offers next summer. However, Oladipo can help himself with a bounce-back 2020-21 campaign under new Pacers head coach Nate Bjorkgren, whom he's excited about. The star shooting guard struggled in his return from a knee injury this past season, averaging just 14.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 27.8 minutes per game. He shot 39.4% overall and 31.7% on 3-pointers.
Even with Oladipo playing in just 19 games in 2019-20, Indiana went 45-28 to earn the No. 4 seed. Unfortunately, the Pacers were swept by the Miami Heat in the first round. If Oladipo can return to form, though, they could be a threat in the Eastern Conference. Naturally, his goal is to compete for a championship.
Oladipo committing to the Pacers doesn't necessarily mean a trade won't happen, because the franchise could still ultimately decide to make a move they determine is best for their future. Of course, a trade is way more unlikely now at this point.
Article Continues BelowThe Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers and Toronto Raptors are just some of the teams that have been linked to Oladipo in some fashion.
