After failing to agree to a long-term extension, the Green Bay Packers opted to part ways with star receiver Davante Adams in the offseason. They traded him to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for a first-round and a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Packers will certainly have a huge hole in the wide receivers group after the relocation of a talent like Adams. However, they can still opt to make a run at guys who are currently available in free agency. A name that has emerged as a potential target would be veteran wide receiver Julio Jones who was recently released by the Tennessee Titans.

He is now a shell of his former shelf but there are still reasons to believe why he can be an asset for a team like the Packers that is aiming to have another shot at the playoffs in 2022.

With that said, let's take a look at three reasons why Green Bay needs to sign Julio Jones after the Davante Adams trade.

Julio Jones Packers Signing – Yes!

3. Julio Jones can be signed on a short-term bargain deal.

After making moves in the offseason, the Packers have already gained more flexibility as they currently have $22 million in cap space available, per Spotrac. Green Bay can certainly afford Julio Jones, given that he is only coming off an injury-plagued season.

He only saw action in 11 games and tallied 434 receiving yards on 31 catches and a touchdown in 2021. Not getting to play for the majority of their games will surely hurt Jones once he negotiates a contract with a new team in the offseason. Given this, the Packers can offer a short-term, bargain deal in order to not be tied to him if he fails to perform and stay healthy next season.

Overall, Green Bay should still grab the opportunity to grab the seven-time Pro Bowler on a pay cut and take the gamble that he will be able to have a more productive season in 2022. If he does then acquiring him on a bargain deal will surely pay dividends and help the Packers in their bid for another postseason run moving forward.

2. Having a QB like Rodgers along with a shallow depth at the receivers group can make him productive on the field once again.

Julio Jones has always been a solid receiver ever since he arrived in the league back in 2011. During his days with the Falcons, he was paired with a respectable quarterback in Matt Ryan. Though he is not a top-tier QB, Jones still reached the 1,000-yard mark seven times, with the most recent being in 2019.

After getting traded to the Titans, the receiver then played with another decent playmaker in Ryan Tannehill. The more crowded offensive rotation as well as the injuries that he sustained surely played a part in the regression of his performance in Tennessee for the 2021 season.

For the first time in his career, Jones will be given the chance to play with an MVP-caliber quarterback in Aaron Rodgers if the Packers opt to sign him this offseason. It will certainly make a difference and might just help him find his groove once again.

Moreover, after the relocation of both Adams and Equanimeous St. Brown, the team is now left with a shallow depth at the receivers unit led by Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb. Jones can surely carve a significant role in the Packers' offense and finally get back on track after having a low level of production for the past two seasons.

1. Julio Jones is still Julio Jones.

Yes, Julio Jones is nowhere near the level that he once performed at the peak of his career. Multiple injuries have already slowed him down and his advancing age is not helping his cause as well. However, many people also tend to forget that he is only two years removed from completing a 1,394-yard season with the Falcons back in 2019.

The veteran wide receiver will gain an opportunity to start all over again if the Packers were to go after him this offseason. The departure of their WR1 in Adams will force the team to rely on Jones and give him his fair share of touches on the field. Inheriting that role will also entail him trying his best to stay healthy for the majority of the season at this stage of his career. At the age of 33, he is already at the tail-end of his football years although he still has a couple of years left in him to have a sizable role and attempt to contribute to a team.

Luckily for the Packers, several talents in the NFC have opted to go to the other conference which now increases their chances of attaining success despite losing an important piece in Adams. At the end of the day, Julio Jones is still Julio Jones even after all the injuries that he has encountered in recent years. Ultimately, his level of talent can still allow him to be a contributor for a team like Green Bay that is lacking depth on offense and is aiming to return to the playoffs next season.
