Aaron Rodgers is under contract with the Green Bay Packers until after the 2019 season, but talks about his extension has been heating up since the Atlanta Falcons made Matt Ryan the first NFL player to reach the $30 million per season salary by handing him out a five-year extension last May.

While citing a source, Adam Schefter of ESPN has relayed a report that Rodgers and the Packers are trending towards striking a new deal with both camps being cooperative with each other, though, it may take some time for it to get done, considering the high-market value of Green Bay’s franchise quarterback.

Aaron Rodgers and Packers are, in words of a source, “creeping along towards a deal.” Both sides still motivated to get it done, but one issue is this: Top-of-market deals always hard because there is no ceiling and this deal will make Rodgers highest-paid player in NFL history.

Big players warrant big money, but in the case of Rodgers, he does not have that much leverage to force Green Bay into giving him a more lucrative deal. For one, he won’t be a free agent until the end of the 2019 season. There is no immediate concern for the Packers that Rodgers will leave them any time soon, unlike the situation last year by the likes of Kirk Cousins, Jimmy Garoppolo, and the aforementioned Ryan.

Having said all of that, Schefter’s report seems to point out that the Packers have a plan to satisfy Aaron Rodgers and his camp, though, whether that would be enough for the quarterback is something that remains to be seen.
