The Green Bay Packers defeated the Detroit Lions by a score of 23-22 in a pivotal NFC North showdown on Monday night, but instead of talking about the performance by the Packers, everyone is talking about the officiating.

Down the stretch, Lions defensive lineman Trey Flowers was hit with a pair of illegal-hands-to-the-face penalties that did not look like penalties at all, which actually resulted in Green Bay scoring 10 points.

Afterward, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers simply said that there are a lot of bad calls over the years.

“I think it equals out pretty good over the years,” Rodgers said, according to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic.

That obviously won't be enough to assuage the Lions or their fans, as Detroit is now 2-2-1 and sitting in last place in the NFC North instead of being in first place at 3-1-1.

One can assume that Rodgers was thinking of the “Fail Mary” play back in 2012, where a bad call by replacement referees cost Green Bay a win against the Seattle Seahawks.

But that was seven years ago.

Rodgers has a point that bad calls do happen regularly, but recently, it seems like poor officiating is coming more and more into focus, and that is certainly not a good look for the NFL.

It's a shame, too, because the officiating overshadowed what was actually a very strong performance by Rodgers, as he completed 24 of his 39 passes for 283 yards, a couple of touchdowns and an interception.

The Packers improved to 5-1 with the win and will host the Oakland Raiders next Sunday.
