The Green Bay Packers were blown out by the San Francisco 49ers in the regular season, but the Packers believe the rematch on Sunday will go differently. The regular-season loss to the 49ers led Green Bay to reevaluate their communications and correct their mistakes on defense.

Via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

“We came back to the drawing board,” [cornerback Tramon] Williams said via Ryan Wood, “had conversations in meeting rooms, talked about some of the things that we needed to do better, and we really focused on it. We really focused on it. We were giving up too many big plays, and it wasn’t because we were incapable of covering it. It was because the communication wasn’t that great, and we made that a focal point of communicating better. Making sure that we overcommunicated.”

The first time the Packers and 49ers squared off this season, it was expected to be a hard-fought battle between two of the top teams in the NFC. Instead, San Francisco seized control of the game early as they torched Green Bay's defense.

In that game, the 49ers' offense out-gained the Packers 339-198. Additionally, San Francisco would produce two 40-plus-yard touchdowns through the air to seal the victory.

Following the embarrassing loss, the Packers began improving upon their communications with one another in the secondary. As a result, Green Bay's defense allowed under 200 passing yards three times in the final four weeks of the regular season.

Just last week, the Packers held Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks in check for most of the game. The Seahawks' Pro Bowl quarterback would finish with 277 yards and just one touchdown.

Now, the Packers have their sights set on containing Jimmy Garoppolo and San Francisco's dynamic offense. But this time around, the secondary is well-prepared for big plays.
